2010 Efpalio earthquakes
Monitoring of the Mw=5.3 Efpalio (Fokida) event and associated seismic crisis
The Mw=5.3 Efpalio (Fokida) event of January 18 2010 occured within CRL network, at a depth of 6-10 km, on the northern coast of the gulf. This event is followed by an unusal series of strong events, among them a Mw=5.2 on January 22.
It is not clear yet wether this normal faulting event is caused by slip on a north or south dipping fault.
Seismology: Real time seismicity from CRL. Special page on EMSC.
Teams from University of Patras and INSU have been densifying the network around the hypocenter. Contacts: Thimios Sokos (Univ. Patras), Pascal Bernard (IPGP), Hélène Lyon-Caen (ENS), Anne Deschamps (GeoAzur). Pascal Bernard and Pierre Dublanchet are in the area from Saturday 23 to Wednesday 27.
Geodesy: Teams from the University of Patras and INSU are installing temporary permanent GPS stations (10Hz sampling rate) and will remeasure points M, I, H of the network where the latest measurements were made in 2006 and 2008. A permanent GPS station of CRL, (EYPA), is near the centre of the crisis area. Contacts: Stathis Stiros (Univ. Patras), Pierre Briole (ENS), Antonio Avallone (INGV)
Radar interferometry: Teams from the National Observatory of Athens, the University of Patras and INSU will gather the latest ALOS and ENVISAT acquisitions and produce interferograms as soon as new images are aquired. Information about the crisis has been sent to ESA. Contacts: Panagiotis Elias (NOA), Pierre Briole (ENS), Vassilis Anastasopoulos (Univ. Patras)
Electro-magnetism: A team from INSU (Jacques Zlotnicki and Paul Yvetot, arrival on Tuesday 26) will install additional magnetometer stations. Contact: Jacques Zlotnicki (Univ. Clermont-Ferrand),
